Saaremaa is known as a good place for a holiday where one can enjoy distinctive nature and many historical sights. Due to the peculiarities of a maritime climate and the soil, the flora and fauna of Saaremaa and its neighbouring islands has a unique diversity, while in several bays and coastal lakes are, curative mud is found.
The main sights are, however, not only limited to the natural environment (meteor craters, botanical sights, Saaremaa nature preserves are also related to the Open-Air Museum with a rich history and interesting cultural heritage, and archaeological sites of discovery).
Saaremaa has preserved much of its uniqueness due to its location and isolation. Houses with thatched roofs and stone fences can still be found in its ancient villages; beautiful folk costumes and a distinctive vernacular have survived.
The only town in Saare County is Kuressaare, its most important tourist magnet being the 13th-century Episcopal Castle, which is the only one of its kind that has survived in the whole of the Baltics. Kuressaare is also known for its beautiful, well-preserved Old Town. The local health centres are also located in the naturally beautiful and architecturally valuable peaceful town of Kuressaare, which has a history of more than 170 years as a resort town. In its peak era (1924-1939), Kuressaare resort town was known everywhere – in Western Europe and even Australia.
